Introduction
It was fortuitous happenstance that led me to see ETA Gordon Hendricks’ show at the Lincoln Alexander Centre in Hamilton, Ontario. I had originally called the “Linc” box office to inquire if ETA Steve Michaels would be performing any time soon. The ticket agent informed me that Steve was not booked; however, an Elvis tribute artist from Great Britain would be appearing the following week. Since Gordon’s show was a private booking and not a Lincoln Alexander Theatre production, the agent instructed that, if I was interested, I would have to contact a lady named Rose about tickets. (At this juncture of my story, I should mention that my knowledge of ETAs was limited to Steve Michaels; and I had never been to Collingwood and had no idea that “Rose” was Rose Geoghagen, an ETA competition judge). Intrigued by the possibility of seeing a new ETA , I did as the agent recommended and contacted Rose immediately as the show was almost sold out. Rose brought along the two remaining tickets to our meeting at McDonald’s (Rose likes their coffee), and I opted to purchase the single aisle seat in the third to last row. I spoke to Gordon after his show, and I felt compelled during our conversation to ask if I might interview him. To this day, I have no idea what prompted me to request an interview, as the idea for an ETA fan magazine did not exist —not even in my wildest imagination. Almost a year later, the seed planted during that first meeting with Gordon resulted in one of most popular interviews posted on SIDEBURNS Magazine.
I have seen Gordon Hendricks perform several times since that first show at the Linc at Sandra Gold’s shows at the Casablanca Winery Inn and the ScotiaBank Centre, and at the Flaming Star and Collingwood Elvis Festivals, which are all represented in the following photos from my personal collection. But before we proceed to the album, on behalf of all SIDEBURNS Magazine fans, followers, and friends, and me…
