Thank you to Brent Freeman for sending along this great story about his and Matt Cage’s experiences in Colorado:
While Matt and I had our shows in Denver, the organizers told us the guy, who took the fired peanut butter and sandwiches to Elvis when he flew in the Lisa Marie to Denver in the 1970s, was coming to our Saturday night show. Both Matt and I had always heard the tale of Elvis deciding out of the blue to fly from Memphis to Denver just to get these sandwiches, but we didn't know the Denver side of the story.
Well, this fellow, Nick, worked for the Colorado Mine Company (a catering company) at the time, and his boss told him to make a big batch of “Fools Gold” sandwiches, as Elvis was coming to Denver for them. The sandwiches are peanut butter, jam, and bacon! So, 16 year old Nick did just that, and had the pleasure of taking the sandwiches to Elvis at the Denver airport. Through the years, he got to meet Elvis a number of times as Nick was good friends with many of the Denver police who acted as bodyguards for Elvis anytime he came to Denver/Vale, Colorado. As if this story isn’t cool enough, Nick made Matt and me a big batch of these sandwiches which he brought with him to the show!! He then asked us to come and see him at his little café where he still makes these same sandwiches. The whole place is like a shrine to the King. We had a great time there, and the sandwiches are really good…lol. The cafe has a Facebook page for more info, but no website.
